An Invitation To Serve

One bright afternoon at The Underground, a few students noticed work happening on the church grounds. Tools had been thoughtfully set out for those doing the work, and Pastor Jeremy, with a playful grin, asked, “Want to help?”

To his surprise, the students said yes.

He handed them the leaf blowers and showed them how to use them. What followed was simple but joyful work - cleaning pine needles, moving together, laughing, and discovering a sense of purpose in caring for a space they have grown to call their own.

Around the same time, Pastor Jeremy noticed a man nearby who needed some love and practical support. His vehicle ran out of gas. Pastor Jeremy prayed with him, sought to meet his immediate needs, and drove down to the gas station to get enough fuel.

When he returned, the vehicle still needed help moving. This time, it was a different group of high school students - not the ones who had been helping with the leaf blowers - who came forward to lend a hand. Together, we were able to get the car moving and back on the road.

It was a simple sequence of events, but it spoke volumes. Each student who stepped up did so willingly, showing a heart ready to serve. It didn’t matter their faith or background - they saw a need and chose to make a difference.

That afternoon, God’s invitation to serve was clear in two small but meaningful ways: through care for a place that nurtures connection and through compassion for someone in need. Whether wielding a leaf blower or lending a helping hand, each student had the chance to contribute, to bring hope, and to experience the joy of making an impact.

The invitation to make a difference is always there - all it takes is a willing heart.
