Beyond the Surface: Hearing the Cry Behind Everyday Conflict
Last week, two young men got into an argument over a video game. Thankfully, I was able to step in before it went any further. As I began talking with them, it became clear that one of the boys was far more emotional than the other. It felt like there was something deeper going on—something beyond just a disagreement about a game.
As the conversation continued, he suddenly shouted, “I can’t do anything right. I’m a terrible person. That’s why I shouldn’t even be on this earth.”
In that moment, everything paused. I silently asked God to give me the right words to say. Then I responded gently, “Tyler, we want you to be here. You don’t have to be perfect. Conflict between friends is going to happen, and that’s okay. I’m here to help you through it.”
After a few moments, Tyler apologized to the other young man, and soon enough, the video game resumed. On the surface, it seemed like everything had settled.
But his words stayed with me. “I don’t want to be on this earth.” They echoed in my mind long after the moment had passed. I knew those weren’t just words spoken out of frustration—they were coming from a deeper place of hurt.
Because of that, I felt it was important to involve Tyler’s family. I reached out to his grandmother and shared what had happened, expressing my concern about what he had said. She listened with care and thanked me for speaking up.
In that moment, I was reminded how important it is not to ignore words like those. Sometimes what looks like a small situation on the outside can reveal a much bigger struggle within.
Let’s keep Tyler in our prayers as he navigates these big emotions, and continue to show compassion and support to those around us. We never truly know what someone else may be carrying.
