Serving Side by Side: The Power of Presence and Invitation
This past week, I found myself quietly grateful for the way our volunteers step into the lives of our students—not with an agenda, but with presence, invitation, and care. These moments don’t always make a lot of noise, but they carry deep weight.
Mark is a great example of this. He shows up the same way every time: with a heart ready to serve and snacks in hand. But what stands out most isn’t the food—it’s the way he invites students to serve alongside him. Without making it a lesson or a requirement, he creates space for students to help pass things out, restock, and think about someone other than themselves. In those moments, our leaders aren’t just doing for students; they’re doing with them. It becomes a shared act of service, a quiet invitation into something bigger than their own needs.
That same spirit shows up when it’s time to clean up. Our volunteers consistently invite students into caring for the space they call theirs. What could feel like a chore turns into a shared moment of ownership. And the response has been encouraging—students willingly jump in, wiping tables, picking things up, and helping reset the room. There’s something powerful about adults and students working side by side, both seeking to care for a space that matters to them.
Another moment that stuck with me happened when Heidi, completely unprompted, challenged a few students to try a game and see who could complete the task. It was playful, competitive, and just uncomfortable enough for everyone involved. By the end of it, we had all tried something outside our comfort zones and shared a genuine laugh. In that simple interaction, walls came down. A connection was built. Relationships deepened—not because it was planned, but because someone was willing to engage.
One thing I often pray during my time here is that students, while they’re with us, might begin to consider something outside of themselves. This week felt like an answer to that prayer. Through snacks, games, cleanup, and shared laughter, our volunteers modeled what it looks like to serve, to invite, and to care.

Through our free drop-in centers, we create safe, welcoming spaces for youth to connect with background-checked, trained mentors over games, snacks, tutoring, and life-changing conversations about faith and purpose. Whether through our regular school-year programs, summer camp, or seasonal events, we are dedicated to building authentic relationships across Kitsap and North Mason counties.
