A Faith That Grows Beyond Our Walls: Miles’ Story
Miles first came to the Underground a few months ago. At the beginning, he was a little skeptical. Like a lot of teens who walk through our doors for the first time, he wasn’t quite sure what to expect.
At first, he didn’t come on our regular drop-in days. Instead, he started showing up specifically on Tuesdays for Club.
Week after week, Miles listened during the stories and messages, joined in the games, and began asking thoughtful questions. He started asking for prayer. It became clear that something deeper was happening in his life.
One night I asked him if he owned a Bible. He told me he didn’t, but that he really wanted one.
So we gave him one.
Several of our leaders wrote notes inside the cover and added encouraging scriptures for him to read. I showed him where to start in the New Testament with the Gospels, beginning in Matthew.
Miles took it seriously.
Before long he had read through the Gospels and moved on to Acts. The next time he came to Club, he pulled out his Bible and proudly showed us what he had been doing. Passages were highlighted. Sticky notes marked different pages. He had been studying it on his own.
He even began asking where he could find a youth group to keep growing.
Then something happened that reminded me why spaces like the Underground matter so much.
On Friday I visited the school during lunch to connect with students. As I walked through the cafeteria, I spotted Miles sitting at a table.
And there he was—reading his Bible.
In the middle of a busy high school lunchroom, Miles had it open in front of him, continuing the journey he started here.
Moments like this are why the Underground exists. Every week, teens walk through our doors looking for a place where they belong. Through relationships, mentorship, and faith-centered conversations, lives are being changed—one student at a time.
