Leading with Love: Jan’s Heart for Students
Jan has been faithfully volunteering in Bremerton for the past four years, showing up week after week with a servant’s heart and a passion for students. She is a dedicated leader who consistently comes ready to serve, build relationships, and boldly share her testimony.
One of Jan’s greatest strengths is her ability to connect with people. She has a gift for engaging teenagers and stepping into spaces that can sometimes feel closed off. Students often sit in familiar groups and may not want outsiders joining them—but Jan is never seen as an outsider. With a smile and a card game in hand, she’ll pull up a chair at any table.
Just this past week, Jan brought her favorite card game, Corner on the Market, and played with two different groups of teenagers. Through something as simple as a game, she created space for connection, laughter, and trust.
Jan’s commitment doesn’t stop at drop-in. She also shows up during the week to lead and support small groups. This week, our students were discussing conflict and were asked, “How do you walk away from conflict?” The student said you ignore it. Another said you can't . Jan built on that moment by sharing honestly that she couldn’t walk away from conflict of her own—but that Jesus helped her become a different person.
She reminded students that we can’t handle conflict by ourselves; we need the help of Jesus. Her vulnerability and faith were powerful, and we truly believe her words resonated with the students in the room.
We are incredibly grateful for leaders like Jan. As we continue striving to share the gospel with every student in Kitsap County, we are looking for more leaders who are willing to show up, step in, and love students the way Jan does.
